Stuck During Update

Is it normal for the white htc EVO 4G screen to be stuck for a half hour during the update? I was wondering if anyone else had this issue or what I should do to fix it?

It has been stuck on the screen for over an hour now. I removed the battery and restarted and it is doing the same thing. Is anyone else having this problem?

Have you ever been rooted?

No I have not. I just got off the phone and they are recommending a hard reset. Is there anything else to avoid doing this?
