In order to have Google maps pinpoint my location (by tapping the compass logo, I need to have the 1st 3 locations options checked ( ie Google's location service, GPS Satellite, Location & Google Search) in settings.

Is this correct, or have I checked more options than necessary?

You don't need all 3 checked. GPS will be the most accurate, but also uses significantly more battery. Unless you need your location accurate to within a few dozen meters, you usually don't need GPS. Google location service is based on the location of the wifi hotspot or the cell tower (depending on how you're accessing the internet). It's not as accurate as GPS, but for the most part will work just fine for you. The accuracy is more like within 100 meters or so (these are rough estimates based on my experience).

Not sure what you mean by the Location & Google Search option in Settings--I don't see that under my Maps Settings nor my System Settings/Location.
