I use my phone a lot to record audio of my bands' practices, and on my iphone this worked fine, however on my HTC one the audio is distorted beyond recognition. This happens when I use the stock voice recorder, as well as RecForge (and RecForge II) and Hi-Q MP3 Rec apps. Those apps have allowed me to try using front and back mics as well as disabling the Automatic Gain Control. Nothing has helped.

Now, normally I'd chalk this up to a (very disappointing) limitation of the phone, however last week I tried taking a video of the practice instead of an audio recording and the audio was crystal clear. Does anyone know why this might be? And more importantly, does anyone know of an audio recorder app that's using the same method as the camera app to capture audio. Lastly, I'd also be up for a video app that lets me turn off the video function and capture just audio.

Maybe you're covering the mics when recording the audio? I never seem to have issues with recording

I'm having the exact same issue as OP. Audio from video is crystal clear. Audio from recording app is awful. Any suggestions appreciated.

The phone is set up for quality audio when recording video only. When recording audio only, the sound quality won't be of the same quality. This would be represented by the size of the audio file. I believe the phone treats the audio only as taking a memo. I don't think this can be changed.

That's really disappointing. Surely there is an app or a fix to be able to utilise the video audio without having massive HD videos taking up space. Iphone 5 beats HTC one hands down in this area.

Also I seem to remember HTC marketing this phone as a great phone to record audio of concerts etc. Strange.

No. 100% identical situations when recording. Just distorted with the audio apps and clear with video

Considering the access developers have you'd think there would be a way to access the video settings for an audio app, its just whether anyone has thought or cared to do so

Bringing this to the top. I just discovered this issue, audio quality is great with the video camera, and poor with the voice recorder. I was looking for an app that uses the video mic for audio recording, but couldn't find anything. Hopefully someone will see this and have suggestions.

I've given up and am just using the video function to record my practices (with a nice shot of the ceiling in the practice room). Generally I only keep the files for a couple days to listen back to what we worked on and then will delete them anyway so it's not a big deal. It would be nice to have a proper solution though.

There's something special in the HTC Camera app that works with the special high gain mics in the One. I tried using the MixBit video cam app to record a Sleigh Bells concert and it came out pretty bad. The standard HTC Camera app recorded it perfectly though.

So I think HTC has to tell developers how to access it, otherwise, I'm not sure this will ever be resolved.

Ya, sorry, I should have mentioned that too - I tried another camera app, mainly so I could lower the resolution and save file size, but the sound was also distorted with it. Don't know if all camera apps would be the same, but so far it's just the stock app that can record my band practice without distortion.
