HTC One M7 will not boot. Would like to retrieve photos from it

I was given someone else's phone that will not boot. I know very little about Android -- but am more computer-literate than the owner and that's how I ended up with it.

The phone freezes when booting. After it shows the AT&T logo, the frozen screen has an "htc one" logo with "beats audio" written down below.

I would like to pull the photos off of this device (which means I can't do a factory reset) but I have no idea how to do it. I don't believe the phone has been modified in anyway (rooted or whatever). What can I do?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

See if it connects to a PC. If it does, just copy the files.

If not, put it into download mode and see if adb can see it. (You need to install the HTC Drivers.) Then you can use the Linux shell Get command to get the files to the PC. (With ls to see what's there, cd to switch directories, etc.)

Factory reset shouldn't wipe the photos as it shouldn't touch what it believes is an SD card. Factory reset should only clear system data not internal storage
