My M8 is the Unlocked version. Android L 5.0.1. I flashed a stock ROM. My software is 4.16.1540.8.

    Will I get OTA updates?

When the phone is turned off and charging, I get a warning message:
"This build is for development purposes only.
Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission.
Failure to comply may lead to legal action."

Is that because the bootloader is unlocked or what? If I were to re-lock the bootloader, if that's even possible, would it go away?

    Thanks.

    Hi,
You will no longer get OTA updates. They will fail to install.

The message is because you unlocked your bootloader. In order to get the message to go away, you need to return to stock and relock the bootloader.

However, if you are also S Off, you can flash a custom Recovery, and then flash any custom ROM appropriate for your device.

    Humm...not understanding fully.
I won't get OTA updates even though its a stock ROM from HTC?

If the warning is caused by unlocked bootloader, how does a different ROM affect it?

One more thing, I have TWRP installed. Isn't that a custom recovery?

Rooting automatically stops any OTAs. The system looks for anything that has been modified as part of the update process. A different ROM does not affect the bootloader. I have run Liquid, carbon, and now Slim, and I get that message every time I reboot my device.

TWRP is a custom recovery, but with HTC devices you need to be S Off (most of the time) to flash a different ROM.

Let me ask this: if I flash a stock recovery will I get OTA?

Asked a different way: what needs to be done to get OTA? Totally unroot, re-lock bootloader, revert totally to stock?

    Thanks.

Yes you need to be completely stock but you dont need the bootloader locked. And you dont need s-off to flash a roms just a custom recovery. Your best bet if you want the OTA is to lock your bootloader and use a RUU to go back stock.
