I haven't seen any info at all on the internet about any forthcoming root for this device. Since the device internals are the same with just the added audio enhancements, is it safe to use the same method to root as the OG M8 edition?

The root method should be the same.
Your best bet is to head over to the Sprint M8 forums over at XDA Sprint HTC One (M8) - xda-developers.
This thread in particular [Tutorial][Resource][Root]Unlock-Recovery-SuperSU for HTC One(M8)-Sprint-m8_whl - xda-developers.

Keep in mind that when you go to HTCDev to unlock your bootloader, it's going to do a complete factory reset on your phone - so you'll want to back up anything you have in internal memory that you want to keep before doing it.
