My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
One minute my phone was playing music fine, then the phone stopped recognizing my headphones. I've tried cleaning out the headphone jack but that did not work. It happened before and after a day of cleaning it out to no avail, I restarted the phone and the phone started recognizing the headphones. I tried it this time but nothing happened. The music just plays through the speakers. I have the Harmon Kardon Edition with the stock Harmon Kardon Headphones.

Welcome to Android Central! Do the headphones work fine on other devices? And have you tried other headphones on your One?

Hey I've had the same issue. If you have cleaned it out with compressed air and it still doesn't work, try the SoundAbout app. It worked for me. Now I'm trying to figure out what is causing the issue.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
My beats headphones stopped working immediately after the update to 4.4.3 to my HTC One M8. They do work on other phones. BoomSound does not turn off when I plug them in. I tried an old set and they do work on the HTC One.
Any ideas???

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
What Software system are u using? As I know for the M8 443 update, it seems to give the stability on headphones icons.
Have u ever tried reboot your phone or do a factory reset?
Or anyone had the same issue with u?

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Mine started doing the same today :(
When playing music with the headphones plugged in, the headphone icon is not displayed and the sound comes out of the speakers.
I had the software updated yesterday ... which may be the cause
I restarted my phone and also reset to factory settings but nothing has helped :(

Just tried my headphones and no issues at all. This was the first time I'd plugged them in in a while as well.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I started having the same problem with my headphones, my Urbanears Zinken headphones won't be recognized while my HTC earplugs which came with my device works fine, my headphones works fine with everything else (computer and other mobile devices.) I bought the headphones 2 weeks ago, and I was really enjoying the music (with BoomSound turned off, seems the clarity decreases with BoomSound on to me.)
so I would like to know how to fix this..
please help. =(

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Though I don't have any real solution I thought i would add my experience with this as well.
Yesterday, my headphones(the HTC pair that came with the phone) were working fine in the morning. Then I left the phone alone for a while with the headphones plugged in but with nothing playing and when I came back to it a few hours later the headphones were no longer recognized as being plugged in by the phone and audio was coming out of the phone speakers.
In keeping with what others are saying, the HTC headphones still work fine with other devices and all the other headphones I have work fine with the HTC One. But the specific pairing of HTC headphones with HTC phone does not work. I am wondering if it has something to do with them being the pair plugged in at the time of an update though I can't be sure if any update occurred during the time I was not using my phone.
As recommended above using the Soundabout app to force media output to the headphones does work, though the in-line remote does not, so I am certain it is a software issue and I am going to hope that HTC releases a fix for it soon.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
The same thing is happening to me. It just started this past weekend. I have tried a couple different sets of headphones, too. All the sound continues to come through the speakers. Is it safe to say it was the recent update that did this? My phone will automatically, and very randomly, go into "Car Mode" and "Dock Mode" too.
Also, when I tried to charge it last night, it wouldn't recognize the charger and kept thinking I had it docked instead. A quick reboot of my phone fixed this.
I will try the Soundabout App but hope that it isn't a permanent thing. I really like this phone.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
hi k8lyncarver , KyaKING ,Georgeyyy ,saulyou2 ,
Did you all update to 4.4.3 ROM and something wrong with the headphone recognized?
Maybe you can share info. with each other about what carrier or Software Version are you using to see if it's really K443 update issue.
Or any one of you fix it or not and share the results for us.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I uploaded my software info, as you can see, I have downloaded the SoundAbout app, works great but it takes too much effort to switch from listening to music to watching a video on youtube with speakers for me. Also, my headphone functions don't work (press button to answer phone call, pause, play.) and I can't turn BoomSound off, which bugs me the most..
hope this gets fixed soon.
also, do you guys know any great games? I like games like Osmos HD, Duet, Cytus, Deemo.
Thanks.
Kya.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I just started having the exact same issue today - I just wanted to let everyone know that there's another one out there.
I too have the latest update and, like K8lyn, I also had Car Mode pop up really frequently without notice. Every now and then the headphones will work for a bit and then switch off letting all the sound stream out of the main speakers at full blast (which is also great for making friends on my commute). I'll try the SoundAbout app, but I hope this gets fixed soon!

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I am still having this issue; occasionally when I plug in the headphones the headphone icon shows up, but very quickly disappears again though I have been unable to predictably get this to happen. I have sent an email to HTC customer support and will let you know what they have to say about it once I hear back from them.
You can see my system info attached.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Another one here. I went to start my run this morning; headphones were in but sound through the speakers. I replugged them and the headphones were fine. 30 seconds out the door, they stopped working and have refused to be recognized since then. I was using the stock HTC headphones; I tried 3 other pair of headphones here and they all did the same thing. Basically I plug them in but the phone doesn't see them.
I tried cleaning out the jack; there was some dirt in there but it didn't fix the issue.
Android 4.4.3
HTC Sense 6.0
Software 2.16.651.4
HTC SDK API level
6.25
Looks like I have the same Android version but older software than most of you guys; no idea what caused this. Thought about updating the software but since you guys seem to be having the same issue on newer version, maybe I'll just stand pat for now...
Has anyone attempted the superglue solution? I'm too new to post links; don't think this would help since it seems like a software issue but thought I'd check. Basically it's a metal connection issue around the headphone jack that causes white noise (per the poster). There's a solution on imgur where he puts a couple of drops of superglue on the rim to insulate.

That sounds like a bad idea. I recommend you stay away from fixes that instruct you to glue things.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
So I updated the firmware to 4.4.3 a couple days ago and now I am having an audio jack issue. At first it was just when connecting my phone to my surround sound and I thought the jack was completely not working. But then I tried it on my HTC headphones that came with the phone and some at have at work and they sound phenomenal.
I have plugged in other devices to my surround sound and everything still works fine. With it being intermittent could it still be a software issue?

Exact same issue for me. Soundabout did the trick but I still want to get to the root of the issue and see what can be done to fix it. I'm pretty confident it's a software issue.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Mine wouldn't work with my Beats By Dre Studio headphones. But, i thought it was only because my AUX cable end wasnt long enough to fully sit in the jack of the headphone. BUT, after troubleshooting, modifying and researching every piece and combination I came upon a SOLUTION. To my problem at least, hope this works for all of you.
First step, download that app SoundAbout on the A.Market place.
Second step, restart your phone.
Third step, open the app and click on Media audio.... (menu) and then scroll down the list of options, clicking. i.e. Wired headset, wired headset (with mic) <-thats the one that worked for me, Aux digital, USB, etc etc. or you can select for it to auto detect if it works for you automatically but it didnt for me.
I realized when looking back, the AUX cable i bought was also an HD/ or 3D cable (the newer high tech-er ones) and it works on the newer cars, and computers, ish like that, but there is still plenty that is not on board with w.e the diff in these cables are. old school prevails in this instance.
Anyways, hope this helped. I NEVER post, but this was driving me nuts, and I owed it back to the man who gave me the idea for SoundAbout!

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
On a Sony Xperia Z1, I've fixed the same issue by unchecking / checking the "clear audio" option. In my case, no third party app was needed

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
100% a software issue....I don't know the issue is with android or htc
My HTC ear piece stopped working on my m8 after I did the update about 1-2 months ago. The HTC ear piece is fine and works on other devices. I have another ear piece from ultimate ears works on my htc m8.
I don't understand why my ear piece from HTC can't work on my m8 anymore. The soundabout worked for me but my music play controls on my HTC ear piece can't function at all.
I hope someone can provide a permanent solution to this sigh...is there anyway to reach HTC for this issue?

- make sure fast boot is turned off (settings > power >)

My volumes are better, although not entirely balanced. Seems like about 40% left/60% right. He had me try it in safe mode as well, but that did not seem to make it any better. The only other option was to do a complete factory reset, which I did not want to do. I'm ok with the 40/60 split.
Good luck!

Waiting to hear back from HTC on this , it's definitely to do with the update. Sticking this in a draw until it's fixed, never had this problem with iOS

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
hi, I got the htc one m8 on Saturday and have been using it fine. BUT I did the upgrade yesterday morning and since then the sound control on my beats headphones doesn't work (but the pause button does) and also, when I hook it up to my car stereo (iphone 4s to android audio adapter) the sound only comes out of the device. any ideas when the next sw update will be?? I have until 8 November to change my phone so I might go with the Samsung s5 as there was no issue when I tried my mates phone in the car. thanks

Ok. Everybody I think I have a solution. At least it worked for my phone. 1. Power off phone. 2. Go into phone menu by pressing n holding vol down and power 3. Once menu comes up pick recover and press power button 4. Once the pic of a phone with a triangle with a ! In the middle comes up hold vol up button and press the power button. 5. This should bring a blue menu up. Choose wipe complete cache. Pick that. The same menu will pop up and then pick reboot. I did this and my headphone jack is back to working. Hope it works for everybody

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I've found a solution, at least on htc one m7: turn off a beats audio. I have a switcher in the settings (in main menu) after that phone will recognize headphones and if you want you can turn this option ON again.
-
Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Seems stupid and weird and probably it's only my case, because I'm very retarded, but try to close the "car" app. You will have to enter into the app as it doesn't appear as running in the apps menu.
You will not only recover the headphones connectivity but also the block screen rotation option.
It is a clear android bug that hopefully will be fixed with lollypop.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I was also having the issue where the One M8 was not recognising my headset which is a HyperX Cloud 2. After doing some fiddling, I found out that the phone would only not recognise the headset with the mic detached from the earcup. Once I plugged the microphone back in everything works fine.
So, this may may be the case for people using headsets with detachable mics. For people using earbuds with an inline mic I would suspect that that the microphone circuit has become severed in some way. Also, this would only apply to people using TRRS 3.5mm plugs as they are the type that include the microphone capability.
For regular headphone/earbud users there is some other software or hardware issue.
-
Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Thanks for this tip. I had the same issue with my HTC One M7 + Kingston HyperX Cloud headset. As soon as I inserted the microphone, the headset was recognized and works fine.
I could also force it to work without microphone attached, via the Soundabout app (although it doesn't display the headset top-icon when using this forced method).
-
Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Just got the hyperx cloud 2 and was a little annoyed that they wouldn't work with my phone but plugging the mic in has worked a treat. Thank you!

I have the same problem with my speakers. They work on my PC, old mobile etc. except on my phone. They work on my phone earlier. The thing is they've stopped working on devices with audio output recognition. The above fixes didn't work either. Could I cut the jack and replace it with the one of my old earphones which are recognizable on my device?

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
I just received my Sony MDR-EX650 and won't work with my HTC one m8. Funny thing is these earphones work with every other device including nexus 7 tablet, iphone, laptop... When I hold down button on the earphone, my phone recognises the headphone is plugged in - but once i let go it thinks headphone is not plugged in..
So i think it's a software issue - has anyone found a solution to this?
Also, I have a few other headphones and they all work fine on my HTC.. just the new sony pair doesn't work..
-
Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Stupid solution, but it actually works 100% of the time:
1. Stick the headphones jack all the way
2. Immediately pull it out just a bit (you will feel just how much you have to pull)
3. Push it back, all the way
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 a couple of times, until the headphones icon is displayed in the notification area
This is probably how rape feels, but hey, the music is singing! :D

Wow. Seems like I am not the only having challenges with my HTC ear phones. Interestingly it was doing a whole lot of software updates at the time. The supplied HTC ear phones HTC One M8 had worked fine and wow what a great sound beforehand! Better than my iPod! Anyway was unable to use said headphones all the way to work:-\....got home researched the glitch.
Thank you for the posters that have advised installing the SoundAbout music app. Now all my music players NOW work and what an incredible stereo hard smackin bass HTC. Just can't understand why they are so low on the radar for smart phone buyers. HTC are still the best! Only gripe is having to pay 4 dollars for the SoundAbout app when trial runs out. HTC should pay for this since its obviously a bug. Otherwise HTC One M8 is equal to or better than the Apple 6 any day especially with its slick amber gold finish:-).
Hi there mate!
Install SoundAbout app off Play store. Make sure the setting is set to with earphones when you want this (in settings). It is only a trial so you will have to pay a few dollars for the full version. Then all your installed music players will work and you will think you are listening to Dolby..unreal sound:D
Lazy aren't they! Its obviously a bug. All you needed to do was to download the SoundAbout app...oh well..the headphones are funky in design;-)
-
Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
It's a glitch with the software. The only solution I have found is to download an app called Soundabout. Configure the settings and you can go back to listening to music.

Re: My HTC One m8 wont recognize that my headphones are plugged in?
Hi, i had the same problem. My phone won't reconize my headphone.
I tried to clear the cache (explained in previous post) but it didn't worked.
I noticed that, my micro-usb was full of dust. (I own my phone since a year).
I took a needle and remove all the compressed dust in the plug.
I did the same in the jack plug and i removed also a lot of dust.
Plugged my headphones, worked directly.
So maybe it's not a software problem, just the dust blocking the headphone from working correctly.

Having exact same issue. FM radio app will not turn on unless headphones are plugged in. But when I plug them in, it plays from the speaker, not the phones. SoundAbout did NOT work. The above cache reset did NOT work. My unit is HTC One:

Have you tried blowing out the headphone socket with compressed air. As dust and pocket lint might be the problem

Yeah.. I mean honestly, my phone is very nice. The earphones that came with the phone work now due to that. My other headphones work just fine. My earphones don't though. Thank you.
I also tried cleaning it out with one of my wire cleaners for my braces. (They work well) It worked for a bit. I may clean it out again. I'm due for a new phone any who.. My phones brake once a year for some reason.. Its been good so far..

2. Immediately pull it out just a bit (you will feel just how much you have to pull)
3. Push it back, all the way
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 a couple of times, until the headphones icon is displayed in the notification area
This is probably how rape feels, but hey, the music is singing! :D
Hi conspeak, as you said I too thought this as the stupidest solution posted for this problem and at this forum, as it would just toggle mono and stereo mode. BUT IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!
I was using the soundabout app till now, but got irritated many times as it would automatically closed itself sometimes. I rooted the phone and installed custom kernel just to solve this issue, but nothing helped. But now this so-called stupid solution worked for me.

I registered in this forum just because I felt so impressed this is the thing that ended up working for me. Started having a similar issue in my Alcatel One Touch phone a few days ago and nothing seemed to do the trick (not rebooting, not SoundAbout, nothing), and THIS finally fixed it.
Thank you, random internet stranger, I came here just to back you up.
