So, I love my M8. I've had it since release day, and I have almost no complaints. Almost.

I used to have the Droid Razr Maxx. It had an RGB notification LED and I used the heck out of it. Different color LEDs for different notifications, like SMS, emails, FB... I even went further by downloading Handcent and assigned different colors to different contacts, so I knew who was texting without having to touch the phone. I would leave the phone on my desk while working, plugged into it's charger and I would notice the light go off and I knew what the alert was by the color of the LED.

I miss being able to do that. And what is even worse is that while the phone is plugged in, the M8's LED doesn't even LIGHT UP when there is an alert. I tell you, I almost replaced the phone when I found this out. Almost.

So I'm wondering... Handcent has an option to light up the screen when a I get an incoming text. That is fine. I will notice that, and while the screen is on, I will see who's texting. That just leaves email and everything else. Does anyone know of any app that will also light up the screen to notify you of something? Are there any strictly notification apps out there? Maybe even something that WILL make the phone's LED light up while plugged in?

There are a few apps I've used and liked. Noled shows icons that blink on your screen. Peek is similar to the moto x breathing notifications. Dynamic Notifications are also good. I prefer my dot view case. I have rooted viper Rom and xposed mods that allow me to have it light up on notifications and allow apps that I want to show. Hope this helps.

You sound just like me. I use "Notify me!" in combination with "repeating notifications" and it works great. My phone lights up for all the specific things I pick, and it keeps doing it until I have read the notification. Just like it did on my iPhone. Some people say it wastes battery to have it light up so much, but I can still make it a whole day.
