My wife's relatively new M8 recently developed an issue where contacts would no longer be quickly suggested when starting to type a name into the Email app's "To:" field. I also noticed that the Contacts were often syncing endlessly. She has LinkedIn installed as well, and those contacts would also be syncing endlessly. It may be the number of contacts that was causing an issue--total contacts between Google and LinkedIn number around 6000 or so. But the fact of the matter is that it originally had no problems pulling up contact suggestions quickly.
I first tried a reboot and then a couple of cache partition wipes, with no luck. Also tried unchecking and then checking the Contacts sync box in Settings>Accounts. What did the trick was to remove the Google account completely (in Settings>Accounts), then add it back again. For good measure, I also uninstalled and reinstalled LinkedIn. After that, everything went back to normal. Also have not seen the endless syncing return.
