Why won't my M8 update past version 3.28?

My M8 won't update past version 3.28...

I live overseas, and ordered a droid from the US to use. Unfortunately, I received a Verizon M8 running "software version 3.28.504.4," which I'm guessing is really old? I'm coming over from windows phone, so I think the newest version is 5+

Anyways, I can't send those crazy new video snaps because my system software is so dated.

When I go to update my phone, "software update only works in CDMA mode," but, when i switch to CDMA and check, it'll say "no network found (because i'm using a korean sim card) and will eventually say that the download was unsuccessful.

Is there a relatively easy way to get the latest android version on my phone without risking bricking it or anything? I'd be really screwed if I couldn't use my phone, but really would like the latest OS... thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! That version # is not the Android OS version, but rather HTC/Verizon's own firmware version number. The latest version is 3.28.605.9, although it might be slightly higher now, because there was just recently a very small update that was a patch for the Stagefright vulnerability. You won't get the official updates pushed to your phone if you're not on the Verizon network, though. That's one of the disadvantages of using a carrier-specific phone outside of its network. You could try using HTC Sync to search for updates and install them if available.

I just took the stagefright update, and my Verizon M8 software version is now 4.17.605.9, and Android version 5.0.1.

That software update PDF I linked mentions different version numbers for SU4A and SU4B. I'm assuming these are for slightly different hardware versions or regions. It sounds like the OP has SU4A, while Mooncatt has SU4B.
