Restoring Phone Contacts without Backup

I recently had a HTC Sense has unfortunately stopped loop error on my phone. I corrected it by updating my software which installed a new version of HTC Sense. This did the trick and most of my settings are fine (images, texts all still there) however it has completely wiped all of my contacts which naively were stored on the Phone. I have a google backup but for some reason it won't work (says that the account I am selecting does not match the backup account i'm using - even though it does). Is there any way of recovering contacts? Have they been wiped or could it be to do with a setting?

Welcome to Android Central! I don't believe that locally stored contacts (on the Phone account) get backed up to Google as a part of the Google Backup & Restore feature. This is why I always recommend saving contacts to your Google account, rather than the local phone account. I'm afraid the contacts are most likely gone, sorry!
