Does anyone know what DAC this phone is using? I've been very disappointed with Android Phone audio quality (with high quality headphones).

Does anybody know if HTC is actually improving the DAC or if the Beats Audio is simply software?

I've asked this question to HTC's Facebook page. Hopefully I'll get a non-fuffy answer.

I got another fluffy answer. They obviously are a marketing team and have no idea about actual specifics.

I have a feeling it's just another crappy dac with a bass boost aka beats audio.

Beats it pure software, that's why they have been able to port it to other phones, as for the DAC i suspect that it's the same one that qualcomm has always used

ugh. Why does the best sounding phone (wolfson DAC) I've ever had have to have the worst signal strength (Nexus S 4G) and HTC have to keep using crappy DAC's.

I have to help you...I reactivated my account here just to reply.

I'm an "audiophile" kinda now BECAUSE of the nexus s. it's better than the other galaxy s phones that have the wolfson...more power. I've tried several like the epic, fascinate, vibrant...

The key is,,,,,,,you need to root the phone and get Voodoo control. With that app the wolfson is optimized....realizes its true potential.........absolutely amazing sound. The clarity and quality and DRIVE with 5db amplification built into the voodoo (you can adjust) is unbelievable...about as good as adding a low end desktop amp.

I have used a couple high end cans like ultimate ears triple fi 10 and Beyerdynamic dt880 250 ohm.... Both amaaaazing.

I honestly think you're gonna be blown away.

Lots of audiophiles swear by the wolfson + voodoo sound....just google. And search head-fi.org

^ I was very happy with the Nexus S (voodoo+ wolfson), still not as good as Cowon + FLAC. But best phone I've heard, for sure.

Hopefully I'll be happy with the Evo LTE.

I've been generally disappointed in audio quality in the phones I've owned.

Beats in an EQ, really, while wolfson + voodoo is hardware optimization. I had it on the Infuse and it really was very good. Beats won't be terrible (non-audiophiles love it), but the hardware probably won't be as good. The real question is if it's noticeably better than the non-voodoo stuff.

Beats is light years ahead of the gs2's player (complete turd) but i think it still isn't iPhone 4 good.

The yamaha chip they used in the SGSII wasn't clean at all. You could hear all kinds of electrical interference in the signal when using quality earbuds. Also, I'm not talking about the actual music player, I'm talking about the sound coming out of the headphone jack. I was extremely impressed with the Infuse with Voodoo sound (you had to root and use a kernel that included it, but it was worth it). Voodoo gave more direct control over the built-in wolfson DAC, which is why it worked so well.

Beats is just a software EQ and gives us no indication of the quality of the DSP. I'm sure if I get this phone I'll try it, voice my opinion, and turn it off, since I don't typically like EQ's of any kind.

The way they're talking it up, it must be.

Manufacturers talk things up all the time. And unfortunately a lot of the people that review phones (no offense to any of them of course) aren't audiophiles. Which is just fine, since most phone users aren't, either. But I do consider myself somewhat of an audio snob. I might not have the absolute best home theater stuff, or $1,000 cans, but I do have one of the best sounding car audio systems that anybody I know has ever heard, using the top-of-line speakers from a very well respected car audio manufacturer that tends to sweep car audio SQ competitions every year.

Cowon also has wolfson dac inside. Probably a better model.. Some people dont like he built-in bbe sound though. I want I try it.

Even psp and psvita have wolfson dacs... But weak amp
