I have an HTC One X and it is telling me that I have a software update to version (358.44Mb)

When I click OK, my Notification bar says "Download Unsuccessful".

When I click this a message flashes up followed by a Cancel/OK box that says...

    "Phone storage not ready..
Your phone storage is not available to store the system software update because it is being used by your PC as USB storage. Disconnect USB and press OK to start the download or press Cancel to exit"

However, it is not connected to a USB.

As most of us know, the storage shows as unavailable when mounted as a USB device. As soon as you unplug USB it says "preparing storage" or something similar and the storage re-appears including gallery photos etc. I try the update again, same stupid message....

I have tried plugging into the USB and selecting Charge Only. I have tried booting in safe mode - both to no avail.

Why on earth does it think it is connected via USB when to mount the storage it clearly knows it isn't...

Have you tried to have e phone in USB debugging mode and tried the update? I doubt it would be that, but it doesn't hurt to try. Once the update is available to download directly through htc, you can manually install it-- that is if you can't get it to work

    Yeah tried that...

Anyway I resolved it, here is how...

I use Astro File Manager, so browsed to the internal storage

It seems the folder "Download" on the storage medium may have a glitch such as a permissions issue, conflict or lock as it would not open it.

I renamed it Download_old and created a new one called Download and hey presto, all downloads worked.

Thats for the input, I hope this helps someone else..

After updating 4.1,you have to use a tool called HTC sync manager to connect to PC.

You can do it that way, but otherwise it will show up as a mp3 device in "my computer".. If it doesn't show up, right click the "mass USB storage" in the toolbar (usually where you "safely remove hardware") and update drivers>> then it'll show up in my computer as a media device/other

You're a GENIUS!!! I had the same problem. The guys at the Sprint store wanted to do a hard reset. I said, well let me research it first.

You're awesome, thanks for positing your fix, worked like a charm! :-)

Your post has been very helpful, even three years on :-) I was trying to restore my old M7 to stock ROM and had the Download folder issue. Followed your instruction and the update has started downloading. Many thanks!
