The Mate 9 seems to have a lot of additional software installed, apart from EMUI. I assume it’s easy enough to uninstall these apps and switch to the google ones? Is the device bloated or are some of the reviews I’ve read being a bit unkind?

I don't find it bloated. I came from a nexus 6 which so used to pure android experience and to be honest I prefer the emui / android setup. The extra settings and functionality I find useful and there isn't loads of unnecessary apps pre installed. I don't think I uninstalled anything.

Nothing compared to a Samsung sold from AT&T!

It was a little but not too bad. Some of it useful. Not like carrier or Samsung bloat.
