Alarm defaults to silent mode

This is a new problem.

I've got a Huawei P9, EMUI 5.0, Android 7.0. I've had the phone a couple of years, since new. I'm the only person who uses it, so no one else has changed any settings.

I've been through my settings, and all sounds should be working.

When I set a timer, the alarm sounds as it should.

When no alarm is set, a button 'New Alarm' shows at the bottom.
When I click on it, the Ringtone defaults to silent. I can click on this, and select a new ringtone, and the alarm will work.

Once an alarm has been set, the 'New Alarm' button at the bottom is replaced by 'Add' and 'Settings'. When I go into settings, there is no option to set the default Ringtone (there is the option to set the Ringtone for the Timer, which I have set (not to silent).

I've tried closing all apps and switching the phone off and on (a few times), to no avail.

Any idea what the problem might be?

Thank you
