Huawei P9 lite can't open in safe mode

I've picked up a. Robotcaptcha virus and I'm trying to boot into safe mode to remove the offending app.
I press [power key]
Hit reboot, press to confirm
Phone starts reboot.
**At the first vibrate, I press and hold [volume down]
No difference to a normal reboot /startup

I wait till the logo is first on screen - repeat from **
No difference.

Any other suggestions?

Welcome to Android Central! Does the Vol Down button have problems when you try to use it to adjust the volume? If the button itself is faulty, then you won't be able to use it to boot into Safe Mode either.
