Unlocked Bootloader

Brand new Dinc 2 owner. So far pretty happy with stock (except all the Verizon Crapware). Down the road I may consider rooting and romming. How does the unlocked bootloader help this effort. Is this something that should be done even if you're not going to root right away. I heard someone say the first thing they did on the Galaxy Nexus is unlock the bootloader.

Well first off you need to unlock the bootloader if you want to root, and second having the bootloader unlocked is what allows you to flash different software (ROMs).
