Thought my Nexus would be more exciting???

I recently upgraded from the Motorola Droid X to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I heard good reviews and comments from others I know the have the Nexus. The phone just does not seem fast enough. It lacks the ability to change from factory ringtones to convert mp3 songs into ringtones. The volume control and sound effect seem inconsistent. Are there options to bypass the factory settings and change the settings to look more like my own personality and design? I am not the most software or hardware knowledgable of a person but can and will learn quickly if pointed in the right direction? Suggestions welcomed...
