Text formatting in GMAIL app

Hi all-

I can't seem to find this anywhere. Maybe I'm just completely blind and can't find the right way to search. How do we do text formatting (bold, underline, italics) in the compose function of the gmail app? is the feature available somewhere? Or do we have to use the desktop version of gmail only to access those features?

I had the ability to turn on formatting options for a few days last week, and now they have disappeared from the menu! The options appeared at the bottom of the screen after choosing the formatting option from the menu. Now it is no longer there. Will it come back?
