How do you get the labels like the ones in the screenshot below. Specifically the "family, school, etc" under the "star"? I know how to "add image to sender" but I can't figure out the other label. I tried to add labels to contacts but it didn't work. Help with Gmail labels-1380139405140.jpg

You can create labels from the desktop interface. Once the labels are created, you can either assign them manually, or create filters to automatically assign labels based on sender or subject or other criteria. I use them very frequently, both to keep my inbox organized, but also to make searching for emails easier.

I don't know of any way to create labels from the gmail mobile app interface.

EDIT: Just to add, Google also has "builtin" labels, such as the 'social', 'promotions' and 'updates' you see above, with automatic filters. You can turn those on or off from the "inbox" tab of gmail settings (using the desktop web interface). I personally don't care for them, but the option is yours.
