Are there any apps that allow you to know whether your contact has opened the message or not, like the way iOS works.

I want to be able to do this with iOS users and not just people using the same app, thanks.

The short answer is no, not yet. Read receipts are an option in your SMS, however it's reliant on their service sending a confirmation and your carrier delivering it. If you're using hangouts for SMS it's in the app under settings > sms > delivery reports. The next major iteration of Hangouts is expected to merge hangouts and SMS threads together, and at that point it should become cleaner, but ultimately it's still reliant on that data. iMessage isn't really an SMS app, it's an instant messenger with very good SMS integration that does consolidation server side, so with other apple users it's able to display that information, similar to how all instant messengers can.

So are you wishing to hold the recipient to account for not answering your message when you have confirmation that they have opened it?

It's just nice to know when a message is delivered and read. Delivery confirmations in sums spam you with notifications so it isn't viable. Hangouts isn't that great IMO and those faces in the conversation causes things to jump around too darn much lol
