A while back I had my brother root my Samsung Galaxy S3 for me. I unrooted it using SuperSU but when I went to install the latest KitKat update (4.4.2) it flashed the yellow triangle and said I had unauthorized software and I needed to contact the Verizon store. I did the down volume-home-power thing and took care of that but it is clear to me that even though SuperSU says my phone is unrooted it isn't. How do I really unroot my phone? I'm terrible with all this technology stuff so it would be very helpful if someone could assist me!

Well, it doesn't seems to be unrooted because if its unrooted I might be taking the OTA update...... Well, I really want to know did you follow all the steps correctly to unroot your device ??? I think you need to download the stock firmware again from the sammobile/firmware section and flash that ROM into your device with the help of odin to get your device Unroot again. I don't think using SuperSU application to unroot your device is going to work for you. :)

flashing with odin is ok but do not try to downgrade this will damage the Efs folder which stores the imei and serial number. flashing with odin will permanently remove root

I just used the SuperSU option because I saw a lot of posts that said flashing a ROM or messing with the flash counter in general would brick my device if I did anything wrong. If there's a guaranteed tutorial I'll certainly to follow the steps. Do you have one you could recommend? Thank you so much for helping me out!

Also, the RootChecker app says it was unrooted and other apps said they couldn't detect rooting software, though it's obviously still there. Will that effect me unrooting it? And the main reason I want to unroot is to get the Samsung updates. Will I be able to do this if I unroot? Thanks again!

You will get OTA update after unrooting.
You can use rootchecker to check whether you are unrooted.
Also you can click the update option to confirm it.
