Do I Need to Activate Before Updating to JB?

I'm looking to update an LG Spectrum 2 from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 using either the LG Mobile Support Tool or the Verizon Wireless Software Upgrade Assistant. Do I need to activate the phone before updating?

I would like to set the APN options to T-Mobile and use a T-Mobile SIM to activate. If I need to activate first I'd like to know if I can use the update tools with a T-Mobile activation. Any help greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't think so. My Nexus 5 was updated before I first activated it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I bought a used Galaxy S2 T989 instead and had it rooted and stock ROM updated to 4.1.2 before activation. Thanks for your reply Golfdriver97.
