I've been reading several articles mentioning that encryption is automatic in Android 5. Most articles state that as soon as you set up the device it will be encrypted. What about older devices? I have a Nexus 5 that has an encryption setting in the security menu that seems to suggest that I have to enter an additional pin each time I use the device, so I have not turned this feature on.

What happens to my device when it gets updated? Will it automatically encrypt itself during the upgrade? I like the idea of having everything encrypted but not if I have to enter some special password every time time i use the phone in addition to my unlock PIN, but this new encryption process doesn't sound like the old. So during the update does it automatically encrypt and I don't have to use anything special going forward?
