This has been going on for a while now with my Nexus 6.

I type something in the Google Search bar at the top of any home screen. The browser-like window opens with no results and, after several seconds, an error message. Yes, I have internet access, as I can open Chrome and use Google to make the exact same search without any problem.

The only way I can get the Google Search bar working again is to reboot the phone after which it will work for a while before stopping again. I am running OS 5.1.1, Build LMY48M, although this has been going on for at least a few months.

(The x86 for my version is because my phone has an Intel Atom processor.)

I've seen other people suggest turning off or disabling Voice Search--I assume this means turning off OK Google from within the Google Now settings. You could try that temporarily to see if it helps.
