Why did my message notification sounds stop working on the Samsung galaxy s6?

Have samsung galaxy s6 and recently the message notification sounds stopped working. I still get the pop up notifications etc. Just no sound. I Uninstalled 3rd party apps and rebooted several times. All of my settings seem correct (i.e. Settings, notifications sounds). Nothing is muted. I don't want to do a factory default reset as one site suggested. Any tips? Phone is from tmobile, model SM-G920T, android version 7.0.

Have you set a notification tone in Messages in Settings? Individual contact notifications was removed from Messages in Android. (The Samsung update brings them back from what I've heard, but you'll have to wait for it or install it from Samsung Messages 5.0.21.18.)
