Go back to the app I was just using?

This happens over and over. I go through some authentication process in some app, it asks for a bit of information that I have in another app. So, I go to the home screen, find the app, get the information. Now... how do I get to the app that was asking the question?

Well, that depends on what device you're using. On a Nexus 6p running Oreo, there's a square on the navigation bar at the bottom, when you tap that it brings up the recently-used apps for you to scroll through and select what you want.

Every Android I've used for years has 3 buttons on the bottom. Home, back, and recent apps. Just tap recent apps and it will show everything that's open.
