If both were the same price right now what should I get? I have a chane to get one or the other for dirt cheap. Other than updates is the nexus providing anything the gpad doesnt?

My main uses would be Web browsing and reading, school research, and media consumption (movies, youtube).

Both would be running on Verizon gpad through Verizon, nexus outright purchase.

I have the LG G Pad 8.3 and honestly I would skip it. The size and build is appealing but if you're looking for speed, media consumption etc. you can not go wrong with pure Nexus.
