Rooting

In trying to root my g2 using the download from this page:

[ROOT] Root your G2 [ATT|VZW|TMO|KT|RGS|BELL|TELUS|OPEN] [Yay!] - xda-developers

Beneath the video it says to ensure that the phone is in the proper mode, but it doesn't say what that is. Should it be in charge phone, media sync or what??

you need to be in download mode when rooting

You should be in USB debugging. I was thinking of Samsung phones when making last comment.

Yeah make sure debugging is checking. Settings about tap version number like 7times that'll active delvolper options

Make sure USB debugging is checked in developer options and when you hook the phone up to the computer make sure its in PC transfer mode. That's the correct mist for this tool.

When you connect the phone to a computer, a menu comes up with these options:

Charge phone
Media sync
Tethering
LG software
Send images

I was talking about these. Does the phone have to be in one of these modes in particular or does it not matter?

I just picked up a G2 and I rooted using some toolkit, was recommended to be in charging mode.

Kk. I was able to root it in the end. I used ioroot. It didn't work in "charge phone", I put it in "media sync" and it worked fine.
