Conflicting signal readings question

I'm not a techie type so I want to see if I can get some feedback. My dB readings using open signal maps are 10 dbs lower than what the stock settings read. Phone says 109 dbs, open signal maps says 97 dbs. Which one should I trusted the true reading? Also, when a phone reverts between 3g and 4g, what triggers the switch? (are the signal bars for show?) is there a dbs number the phone reaches that makes it switch to 3g. Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

dbs is a negative number, so OSM is reading 10 dbs higher signal then your settings.

What network are you connected to (LTE, GSM, 1xRTT, EVDO, etc.)? And is it always 10 off or does it vary? On CDMA i know that it connects to 1xRTT and EVDO at the same time so it could be each app is reading a different radio.

Also OSM may do some calculations or averaging to the signal, not sure.

In my home area I normally get 3G H, 4 or 5 bars showing. I'm now a mile or two from home and am I believe on the edge of a 4G area, getting alternately 4G with 1 bar (115dBm, 25 asu), and H with 4/5 bars. Despite the weakness of the 4G signal, data seems to be flashing up and down okay.
Does that help answer your question?
No, nor me.
