How is the range of the G3's IR blaster?

In my experience, the range of the G3 IR Blaster is a bit on the weak side. It definitely works, but I often find myself having to outstretch my arm, as well as aiming more directly at the source device. This has been the case in multiple operating locations. However, in my Living Room (most frequently accessed area), I sit approximately 13 feet from my TV & Media Center, finding that I MUST stretch out and aim to control various components.

I'm curious whether or not trying out an alternative IR app might improve performance. I doubt it (as it's probably based on hardware limitations), but it's probably worth a try.
