Why is my lock screen turned sideways and unresponsive to attempts to unlock?

Lock screen is turned sideways and unresponsive to attempts to unlock

At first my screen went black with the exception of the battery bar, then it locked. It's now on the lock screen turned sideways and is unresponsive in attempts to unlock, however the touch screen still works because it will turn on with the double tap still.

Have you fixed this yet? If not, it might be worth removing the battery for a while.
