I know it may have already been asked, but has anyone heard of any possible date for the release? Just switched from AT&T to Verizon and grabbed a G3. Another question...it was between the G3 or the HTC M8 for my first phone on Verizon. I know this is a G3 forum but I would appreciate it if anyone can give an honest opinion if I made the right choice or not. I still have like 8 days left of the 14 day return policy that Verizon gives you to return a phone and switch to something else (of course the $35 restocking fee is BS). I just wanted to get some honest opinions if I made the right choice. Thanks in advance for your time.

Verizon has not announced the update yet so they are probably still quality testing.

Asking if you made the right choice depends on what you're looking for in a phone. Do you want superior picture and video taking? G3. Do you want superior sound without headphones? M8. Do you care about high resolution, if you have good eyes and are a close-to-face user? G3. Stock experience with the M8 is more fluid, but a little tinkering can get the G3 to that level of fluidity. Do you prefer a metal body? M8. Battery flexibility? G3. Larger screen in almost the same exact footprint, the G3 wins there. I believe both phones have double tap to wake and sleep, although the G3 has the sleek knock code.

User preference is everything when selecting a phone. Both will be compatible for rooting and flashing custom ROMs, if you are into that sort of thing.

No word yet on 5.0 from what I know of. I had the m8 first before I got the G3, and my fiance currently has the m8. It's a great phone, I mean it's touted as the best, or second best Android device. I picked the G3 because that half inch bigger screen fits my hand better. It's all preference though.

Wow "xocomaox"..... Definitely a lot to consider I guess. Never thought of all of the different things to consider. You are correct by saying " Superior picture and video ". The camera on this phone is without a doubt, the clearest pictures I have seen on a smartphone. The whole UltraPixel thing with the M7 and M8 was a bit of a gimmick in my opinion. I do like the metal body of the M8 but I guess a camera worthy of taking pictures of this caliber, is probably way more useful than a metal body. Thanks for your detailed response.

Also the G3 has 3GB of RAM as opposed to the M8's 2GB so it's better at multitasking. The M8 is a great phone too but I'm glad I decided on the G3. I'd rather have a better camera, sharper screen, and more RAM than an aluminum body any day. My girl always tells me she wishes she got a G3 like me instead of her M8 because of the camera

Well I would be careful what you wish for. V5.02 came OTA on my Nexus 7 and it made a nice tablet almost unusable. I am content to wait until LG/Verizon have fleshed out the issues with Lollypop before they offer it (whatever version).

I had the M8 on launch day. Hated it. Picked up the G3 on launch day because of the M8. Things I didn't like:

    1. Screen size compared to the overall phone size. The screen is small. Really small!
    2. Camera. OMG, what a POS. The pictures it took were atrocious. I tried all kind of tricks to improve the camera, and none of them worked. It's horrible. Really really bad. (In my opinion of course.)
    3. Getting back to the size, the speakers make it really tall. It’s taller than the G3. Not as wide, but taller. It never felt right in my hand, although I have a big hand, I never could navigate the screen correctly and the power button was too far away. Since double tapping isn’t built in, you have to find an app that will allow you to turn the screen off without pressing the power button.
    4. I love the placement of the back buttons on the G2 and G3. Those are the main reason why I have both devices. (Wifey carries the G2)
    5. Bloatware. Yes, VZW loves it’s bloatware, but at least you can turn it off with the G3. On the HTC it wasn’t as easy. (I don’t know if that’s still the case.)
    6. Screen (again). The overall quality of the screen was not as good as the G3. I didn’t realize this until I got the G3, then looked at the M8. The G3’s definitely a higher quality screen.
    7. Battery life for me was a tie. Both last as long, but the G3 is removable and the M8 isn’t, so overall battery is hands down the G3.

Really, go into the VZW and hold both devices. I think you have the better of the two, but only you can decide. Good luck.

Japan Display Inc manufactures the screens for the HTC M8. LG actually makes their own screens (some G3's had another manufacturer source for screens but most are LG) and in my opinion the ones from Japan Display Inc don't hold a candle to the superior LG panels.

I have had the pleasure of using the M8. The Sense UI is one of the smoothest and you get a sense the phone is faster because if it! However, battery life? Meh! I don't mind the tallness, as those speakers are amazing. But the camera? Again, Meh. The G3 screen width is almost perfect, while the skinny screen of the M8 causes me to make mistakes navigating, as well as SWYPE'ing on the keyboard. It feels more natural on the G3. But, I have been playing Spades Plus on my G3 for about 2 hours, at 37% screen brightness. Went from 100%, to 19% in 2 hours.

Hopefully 5.0 doesn't get released anytime soon. My phone is running absolutely perfectly, and I've never seen a major upgrade on any android phone I've owned go seamlessly. I'll be pretty upset if Verizon tries to ruin my G3 with the update anytime soon.

I looked at the M8 before getting the G3.... Briefly. As others have said, screen size is almost comically small when comparing it to the G3, and I was coming from the Note 3, so a nice big screen was important to me. Additionally, the M9 is going to be announced March 1, so getting a M8 right now seems kind of silly to me

That is incredibly bad! I almost don't believe it. What is your idle battery life like?

Knock Knock and Double tap are the same. I get what you're saying, but the M8 will not "Double Tap" screen off, or at least it didn't back when it was first released. Screen off was a HUGE problem for me because the only way you could turn it off without an external app was the power button at the top.

Since I haven't had one since last August, I could be wrong about it now. Also, I never had any luck with the sequence of double tapping on, but the slide method worked, so that's how I turned the screen on. I still catch myself doing the slide method with my G3 every now and then, before I go, "oh ya" and knock.

I think the answer you're looking for is the difference between knock code and double tap. Double tap, or knock on, wakes the phone and brings you to the lock screen, whereas knock code allows you to set up a pattern of knocks, or taps, you can use when your screen is off that will not only wake your device, but allow you to bypass the lock screen.

Check it out for yourself, pretty cool. Settings>lock screen>select screen lock

Better yet - can someone explain to me the real tangible benefits we should see on the G3 with 5.0? I'm a huge fan of being latest and greatest, but from what I've heard and seen there doesn't seem to be much to get excited about in 5.0. I mean I like the MD and the animations are very smooth, but I'm not sure I want/care about the lockscreen notifications - I've not heard any improvements in performance overall or with the camera - with the LG skin it's almost not noticeable.

I mean I'll be getting eventually, but I just don't feel it's something I need (I've said this before and perhaps my opinion will change once I have it.

Also, I agree with most peoples assessment of the M8 vs G3. Both are fantastic in their own way, but it depends what matters to you. I use a case, I use headphones and I have speakers for music, I REALLY wanted a decent phone camera for a change, and I wanted a replaceable battery.

I agree with you. I have not seen anything stellar or noteworthy in the changelog/features that makes me want to get it, save for "increased performance and battery life with ART". And I am even skeptical of that claim.
