I've noticed when wearing my Ray-Bans if I view the phone in landscape mode, I'm unable to see the screen. Looking at the phone in portrait doesn't effect the viewing at all. I realize that you're unable to see certain screens when wearing polarized glass, however is there a reason I can see the screen in portrait mode only?

Yep. It's normal. All LCD displays are polarized due to the way they work. They are normally polarized directionally so that you can still see it in portrait mode with polarized glasses on.
