Why won't my video's play after I download them to my laptop?

After I downloaded all my pictures and video's to my laptop; the video can't play. I get an error message. It comes up as a mpeg4 movie. I tried opening it up with Quicktime player and Windows Media Player but it doesn't work. Please help. It's my granddaughter's birthday video

It appears that you're probably missing the correct codec package on your computer to play the file format, simple solution tonight would be to download and try VLC player.

+1 to the diagnosis (codec problem and to the fix. VLC is a great player, and has played everything I have asked it to.
