How can you select individual words in a text (to copy and paste)?!? Frustrating!
Does anyone know if it is possible to select individual words inside a text message? I can only seem to select and entire text message.
So for instance, if someone texts me "Hey call bill at 555-8999, he is a great mechanic!" it's impossible to just select the phone number. I have to copy the entire message, paste it and delete what I dont want. (yes, I know the phone number usually creates a link to call from, just using this as an example)

There's not a way in the stock messaging App that I'm aware of. It's the whole message then edit after the paste. You may be able to in a 3rd party messaging App like Textra which is pretty popular, but I've never used it.

Textra selects only the whole message, too.

In Textra, I can just tap the phone number and it sticks it in the phone App for me. I can call and or add it to contacts without copying the message.

Yes. As pointed out in the OP, the phone number is a bad example of text to select.
