My mother's phone is the G4. With her eyesight being bad, she relies on being able to speak and have it type for her. Now, after the update, it's not working. Everything is activated, unless I'm missing something. Any ideas?

Which update are we talking about?

Google Text to Talk was updated today (2/17). That update might help with things.

I'm referring to the Marshmallow update. The issue is talk to text not text to talk.

What part "isn't working" ? is a button missing? Is this the mic button that is on the onscreen keyboard? (If that is missing, you are probably defaulting to a keyboard that does not have that button, like swype maybe?).

No, the microphone is on the keyboard. She presses it and usually the larger mic icon would come up on the screen and say Tap to Speak. She would never have to, but just start speaking. And there'd be a beep or some noise so she'd know it was recording what she said. Now all of that happens except no beep and it won't start recording to turn her speech into text.

Just tried it on this reply, it beeps and immediately starts taking dictation.

Hmm. Weird. Well I guess a factory reset is in her future. As much of a pain as that's going to be.

I was having the same problem, but you are right! Holding down the smiley button for emojis allows you to choose the mic. That was very confusing on androids end, I was a little upset I didn't have talk-to-text anymore but now I see it! :)

Same thing is happening to me. I don't understand what you mean by "hold down smiley emoji, mic will appear, tap". I hit the smiley emoji next to the space bar and the emoji's show up. This happened after Cricket forced an update on me about two months ago. No more voice to text. :(

The Cricket guys put on another Messenger that will allow Voice to text (didn't have a clue as to why it wouldn't work) but this Messenging doesn't let me know when I have messenges or tells me how many unread I have. Lame. I have the Atcatel Idol 4.

Help!

Hold your finger on the smiley emoji. A box will pop up to allow you to tap the microphone, clipboard, settings, etc.

Thank you for the reply! I feel dumb here. On the texting keyboard, next to the spacebar, to the left, is a smiley icon. I press and hold it. It turns dark gray indicating that it is selected. I hold it no matter how long. When it is released the emoji selections come up. Is this the wrong place I am pressing?

Thank you so much!

I was using Gboard and also tried SwiftKey...same result. The only way to get it to work is to disable all keyboards and under "Current Keyboard" have "Automatic - Google voice typing". The voice then works great but editing doesn't work as you can't use a keyboard to correct. Could it be something in the phone as I seem to be the only one having this problem (only after Cricket did a major update - now months ago)?

Alcatel_6055U
Android Version 6.0.1
Kernel version 3.10.84
Build number CAQICQ0

Cricket put on a messaging app (called Messenger) that worked with voice and keyboard (Gboard) but it is lame in that it doesn't notify when messages come in even though notifications is turned on. The tech guy couldn't get notifications to work either. He told me I had two bad choices which neither is acceptable. Should be fixable.

Thanks!

I know this is drastic, but you could attempt a factory data reset and see if that rectifies the situation.
