The URL to the APK -- not on Google Play -- suggests this is still only a release candidate.

Sorry, perhaps this is the correct link. I installed it from the play store, and it works great now that I have figured out how to make it my default phone app on my LGG4

That link is a good one.
It contains Google Store links for both Phone and Contacts.
Based on user comments, the both apps seems to have some major bugs in them. :-(
Re: finally Google Phone app for marshmallow. this thing is awesome.
So far, no bugs in the phone app. The contacts app isn't compatible with my phone.

Any features Google Phone app has over Stock LG-G4 phone app?
Re: finally Google Phone app for marshmallow. this thing is awesome.
Oh I liked the dialer on my nexus 5. Is that what we're talking about? The ID features were sweet.

Can't install from the play store. Says not compatible.

I'm still trying to figure out the app, myself. I know that I like the fullscreen photo of contacts and the favorites dialer screen. I haven't seen a video calling choice o button yet on calls, but I wonder if it's because no one who has called me yet has a phone that's compatible with that feature or if it's because it just isn't there, which is unlike the stock phone app with my T-Mobile LG G4... I might try to research and find a comprehensive list of features that are supposed to come with this app..
