So this is my first LG phone and never had a device that was unlocked from the factory. Where will updates come from? The carrier I choose or from LG or Google?

Currently I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 purchased from Sprint and flashed to Boost. I always got the updates for it Ota from sprint/boost.

I will have the device in hand tomorrow and want to try it out on boost but I don't think it will work due it the sim card size of my S5 and the g5 may not be the same and boost's byod policy really only supports approved sprint phones, the g5 and moto G4+ I was considering they do not. No matter because I'm tired of the sprint network and it's poor coverage when I travel, go camping, hiking and such in more remote areas and the slow speeds of the lte. I been only getting 1 to 2mbps in the "best coverage" areas, so I think I'm going to try Cricket.

So in that event will cricket provide the android updates?

No, MVNOs don't update phones, either the manufacturer does or no one does, depending on the phone. (I don't know what Cricket does with the G5.)

So then it will be something I have to find and install when LG offers it most likely or it will stay at the current version of android it is as long as I own it. I guess that's a small price to pay to be free to go my own way if I don't like a carriers plans or coverage and want to move to another

Update:: so I got the phone and turned it on, logged in to my Google account and started to downlod all the apps I had on my old phone. The G5 found, downloaded and installed security updates before I even put in the carrier sim card. It did all this over my wifi so updates for it had to come from LG.

Yes system and security updates come from LG. I have an unlocked G5 and have had three security updates since May. The latest security update I have is August.
