Rooted LGOG

I bought an Optimus G yesterday, and the previous owner rooted it. I know nothing about rooting, other than I tried to root my Galaxy Nexus and failed miserably. So I have a couple of questions.

First, how can I check to make sure it's actually rooted, and that he wasn't just saying that?

Secondly, what ROM would you guys suggest, and how do I install it/them?

Any help is appreciated.

You can look for superuser or supersu in the apps list. You can also download a root checker from the market. And I'd stick with the stock Rom. I've tried lifeless Rom and I didn't really like. But that is just me.
