Ok. I had a rooted Optimus S (LS670ZVD). Couldn't wait for the Gingerbread OTA update, so I downloaded the update.zip file, and manually moved su binary over to the /system/bin folder and chmoded it. But after updating to (LS670ZVJ) I wasn't rooted and NO rooting method is working for me. Help please! :'(

You need to downgrade back to ZVD. Then if you'd like to help out, test out the new automation tool.

See this thread for details on both downgrading and the automation tool:

My card reader is bad on the phone so I'm stuck. The only way I upgraded was to tell the phone the update command and move the zip to the cache. So, I'm unRooted and out of luck.
I don't think you are out of luck, but will have to do things manually instead of with the automated script.

I just use the /sdcard as a staging area. Can substitute /data/local/tmp for /sdcard/000root

Wouldn't it be easier for me to edit the script than doing it manually?

Just to make sure, did you try that step after booting into recovery, attempting the update.zip, letting it fail and then staying in recovery?

Because if I understand correctly you need to stay in recovery and have the second update.zip fail in order to expose the exploit.

No, I tried it at the home screen. Going to retry after booting into recovery...

Is your ROM ZVJ or ZVD/ZVH?

If your ROM is ZVJ, you need to revert back to ZVD (or ZVH) first and root it.

If you are on ZVD/ZVH, then just reboot the phone and rerun it. It sometimes takes a few tries.

I'm on ZVJ with a fried sdcard reader
Does that mean /sdcard cannot be accessed at all even from within Android, or does it just mean /sdcard cannot be accessed via USB cable through the computer?

If the former, you won't be able to root ZVJ. You can revert back to ZVD using KP500 and root that, but you'll need access to the /sdcard to update to ZVH or ZVJ, and since you don't have access to it, rooted ZVD is the best you can do.

If the latter, then you can copy the ZVD update.zip to your phone and use recovery to install it. ZVD can be rooted with the changes you made.

I'm sorry I didn't realize (or ask) earlier that you were on ZVJ, so I was giving you answers based on you being on ZVD/ZVH.
