Hello, all. I'm about to root and flash my ROM for the first time. I've already located all the instructional posts to complete the process, but still have one question before I get started. Currently I do not have service with any wireless providers as I just bought this phone from a friend of mine. Will I be able to root and flash the ROM without having service? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thread title changed. In the future if you could try to use more accurate titles we'd all greatly appreciate it. Your question is valid and I'm sure others have the same question now or may at a later time but the chances of them searching "Noob needs help" is slim to none meaning any info shared here would then be lost. Thanks!

Ok, you just lost me there. Can you explain what "radio" means, or point me to the respective post for it?

i would love to tell you what it means but i dont really know myself. But i do know that unless its version v9 you have to force flash to v9 before you can do anything

then you must do this:

to check your radio its under settings<about phone< scroll down a bit to baseband version/ sw version

Can't get into settings. Phone is telling me to install an ID before it gives me menu access.

hmm well you can't install a sprint id without without the phone being active but maybe theres another way to figure out what version it is.

Or maybe you can just force flash v9 even if the radio currently is v9 but i never tried it and wouldn't know but somebody else probably does:)

Yes you will be able to do so, but it is slightly more hassle.

To get around Sprint ID you can use the voice command button on the right side of the phone.

Press and hold the voice dialer until the prompt pops up and say "Application Settings". Confirm on screen that is what you want. Navigate to Application Settings->Development->USB debugging and enable it.

You can also enable WiFi that way, say "WiFi Settings"

To tell what version you are currently running say "Phone Status"

I think you can also say "Sprint ID" and choose one of the options and Sprint ID will stop bugging you, but I never tried it and I've since removed Sprint ID so can't try now.

KP500 and Force Flashing works as long as you have USB debugging turned on. Phone doesn't need to be activated.

Well, it seems that using the voice dialer and voice commands works the best for accessing everything without having a Sprint ID. I also found out how to stop it from requesting the Sprint ID.

Using the voice dialer say "Sprint ID" and then choose Switch ID. On the next screen that comes up choose "My ID" and the Sprint ID screen is no more.

So, I have to force flash to V9 to be able to root and flash a custom ROM, right? Just trying to get a clear understanding of all this.

Wow, thanks to all. I'm planning on starting the entire process tomorrow since I'll be home all day. I have to say, though, with all the support here, I'm no longer all that worried about attempting this.
