( SOLVED )so what am i missing?

so i have a lg optimus s. i like it and i'm sure i would love it if i could root. i have printed out the thread by drewwalton19216801, and i have all the software, my phone is in debugging mode. the problem is when i go to cmd.exe and change directories, when i type in the command adb shell i get a message "missing device" or "device not found". PLEASE HELP!! i really want to do this and i really can't figure it out. i have also tried z4root and super one click. get the same thing with all of them. help please. i'm sure it's something simple that i am overlooking.

you probably forgot to install the lg drivers and it's a PITA to get them to work right there is a thread about it somewhere though I'm just now sure where
