Pixel 2 camera app with HDR+ on V20 looks great!

I've been comparing the Google camera with hdr+ to the stock LG camera for a couple of weeks now.

At full auto the Google camera has better pictures about 85% of the time.

Pictures have less grain from too high an ISO, sharper more colorful images, and just more pleasing to the eye.

The other 15% of the time it's on par with the stock camera.

This Google camera with HDR+ has become my daily driver for full auto pictures. When I'm trying to do something else, full manual on the stock camera app it is.

I agree. Pictures look much more pleasing to the eye, thanks to the auto photo enhancing effects algorithm. The background blur effect gives you that portrait mode bokeh look. The V20 gets a mini upgrade from this app... no need to buy another phone because the camera looks great now.

My DSLR is WAY faster than my V20 on full auto. I don't mean to imply it is a fair comparison. Is there any legitimate app on the app store that speeds up full auto snapshots on the V20? Animals don't pose for pics and I've lost so many shots since my V20 takes so ling to complete a shot.

There's an app called HIGH SPEED CAMERA PLUS... basically it lowers the resolution to 1080p max, and the shutter speed and ISO is adjusted for max speed. You can leave the LED flash on for even faster snapshots. You can also do burst shots that capture 20 photos in a second.

There's also a official LG app called LG SoonShot.. basically it shoots a video in 60fps and then you can select and extract photos from the video automatically.

ok so I just downloaded the google camera app and see that when taking a picture in portrait mode, it doesn't save the photos into a gallery. it saves them as individual photos on the gallery selection screen. is there any way to fix this and make the photos just save to a gallery?

There is no "saving to a gallery." Android is like any other OS in that files are stored in various folders. The gallery apps then show you the photos much like the Windows photo image viewer is simply pulling up images from their folder locations.

Are the links to the pixel camera app still the latest or best version that works on the V20 or has it been updated?

Here you go. New version. Get the version 3.8 build. The wide angle version is also available and you can install both.

The version I originally posted may take over exposed photos, but they do turn out brighter and colorful (some times too much). New version is more normal and balanced, plus it includes more options and portrait mode. I currently have both versions installed at the same time (plus the wide angle, so that's 3).

***09/29/18 UPDATE: NEW VERSION of the GCam can be downloaded here: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-cstark27/

Recommended cstark 3.8 build version (has both REGULAR and WIDE ANGLE, you can install both at the same time)

Works great on the V20! Check back for new builds and thank the developer for bringing life back to the V20 camera!
3.8?

Are the new versions compatible? Why the 3.8?

You misunderstand my problem. I don't want to take 10 photos fast. I want to take one photo that focuses and shoots fast. In other words I want it to focus faster.

Manual mode: set shutter speed to 1/30 and change the ISO accordingly. Should fix slow focus.. you still need good light source though, so low light you're better off downloading the app "High-Speed camera" which priorities faster focus and shutter speed.. also has the option to keep LED flash on while taking photos.

I need an auto fix not a slower more complicated one that requires a photography class to learn

I don't want flash on

It's still super fast.. but the problem is the brightness is lower, so low light is going to be difficult without the flash on. The best option for the V20... There's also LG's app called LG SoonShot which basically records a video but let's you extract photos from it, prioritizing capturing moving objects.

I guess LG created that app to address the slow focus speed.. if you want faster focus, get the V40 with dual pixel camera

Thanks anyway. I have no problem with low light photos without flash but it just takes too long to do an auto snapshot.

The V20 has an IMX298 which is old now and doesn't have dual pixel, so focus speed is slow, relying on laser focus which has a delay time when the infrared laser bounces back from the object. This is why I want to upgrade my V20 too because the camera focus speed is too slow, I complained about this throughout the years. The V40 has an IMX363 with dual pixel technology, which will focus very fast and does better in low light... laser AF is gone and replaced with dual pixel phase detection which is better and faster.
