I've had my V20 for about six weeks now. Of course it's on Android 7.
My question is about security updates. I live in Canada. I'm on Fido. My phone is actually an AT&T model and that's probably why I've not received any updates.
Is there any way to force this to happen? The only security update was when the phone was produced in September 2016.
Should I be concerned about this?
I don't normally use anti virus but have installed Trend Micro until I figure out how to get the latest.

You already answered: you are using an AT&T branded phone in Canada with a different service. In order for the phone to update OTA, you NEED an AT&T SIM with active service on it. That's the rules with AT&T, they refuse to support the device if used outside of AT&T. Next time, don't get the AT&T variant, get T-Mobile or an unlocked model.

If you really want to update it, you can ROOT it and install a custom ROM with updated software. OR you don't have to root it but download the updated image and flash it in recovery mode. OR you can fly to the USA and borrow an AT&T SIM (possible that you can ask an AT&T retail rep).

I wouldn't be too concerned with security, most of the hacking is done over the cloud and not on your device.. big companies have been hacked and people's info have been leaked and stolen. Not much you can do about that besides keeping a low profile on the internet. Your name and phone number is probably available on public records like the white pages...

Thanks for the advice. That's exactly what I thought I'd have to do. The good thing is that I've five minutes from the border.
Just so you know it is unlocked. The main reason I bought the AT&T version is because I already got shafted buying a new phone (supposedly, but it was water damaged and the solder was reset at least once then repackaged as new) from a shister and it only worked for 5 weeks. The motherboard is fried but the rest of the phone is usable for parts just in case. All variants are not the same internally.
Canada's model doesn't have FM radio which I wanted also.
Just to be safe I bought the same model from a reputable dealer close to home. Paid very little for it and it is a pristine referb.
So far, so good. Love the phone. Even almost two years old it's got everything I want.
I learned some huge lessons this time around.

SIM Unlocking a branded devices doesn't stop it from being a branded device.

So I have the same setup. Bought a prepaid service from AT&T but the device refused to update until I returned to Canada.

Good news is that since it's prepaid I can top the account off online to get the next update anytime.
