Same. Overall I just restarted my phone and that solved my issue. But also check with your carrier to see if any cell towers are under repair or have some issues.

The MHL cable would only show you the image of the screen of your phone on the TV. This will not allow you to do anything, only look at you wallpaper and any notifications you have there.

I understand your situation. I used my USB to connect to my computer and extracted any photos but to extract your SMS history I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can help you there. I fell on my s5 and had a hairline crack but the screen stayed black but those lights on the bottom stayed on.
