You need to unlock via htc unlock to get root on the gsm variant. Or in better terms you need s-off or unlocked for root.

The gsm kernel on xda works fine on the cdma version. I believe it is the one built from the Europe source if I recall correctly. Not sure why it wasn't mentioned as the kernel you guys are using is built from the same source. As in that source builds with out a issue and has cdma and gsm...

No once deleted it isn't there. How ever if you do a backup via cwm, you can then just restore that backup. Which will put you back to pretty much stock. Keep in mind once s-off there is no going back to s-on at this time. Root you can remove though.
