Bad Coverage - What did I do wrong?

The bad coverage might be due to T-Mobile's refarming of it's network. They're trying to get the iPhone 5 onto the network next year with LTE on the AWS CDMA 1700 Mhz band and moving (somewhat complete?) HSPA+ ("4G") onto the current GSM only 1900 Mhz band. Also if you are not near a major...

How to tell what 4G coverage you're getting

Are you asking for the HSPA speeds? If so, and if I'm correct, HSPA:10 means you are getting HSPA Category 10 speeds, which is up to 14.4 mbps. See this article for a better explanation: Is your 4G HSPA+ Category 10, 14, or 20? | Pocketnow

    Network top slow in NYC?

There's a lot of refarming going on right now, so you might see great speeds one minute and crap speeds/disconnects the next. The network should be stablized next few months once the refarming is complete.

    Can't switch to 3G

Currently, refarming isn't complete, so since he is getting EDGE, he's actually using EDGE speeds on GSM 1900 MHz, not CDMA 1900 MHz. For future 3G/"4G" access (non-LTE) for T-Mobile, a phone with at least CDMA 1900 and 2100 would be needed. If you want LTE as well, you'd also need a CDMA and...
