I also have been suffering this issue for about 2 weeks and so have a few friends of mine so it is far from being an isolated case! Added to that I get "Samsung account update" messages - click on it and nothing happens at all. That is until I get exactly the same message a day later.

That's weird, I have the Galaxy Note Pro 905 that still comes with the metal clip and it does have the customary spring, therefore don't need it if that's what its for... maybe it serves another use??
