So it charged normally in safe mode, and after another restart, it's charging normally booted up in normal mode. I'm not sure what happened, but it seems to have resolved itself. Thanks all for the replies.

How are you able to restart it if you can't turn it on?

Tried safe mode, and factory reset, no change. It actually wouldn't even charge when powered off, still thought it was overheating. Verizon is sending an RMA.

So my S6 recently started displaying messages that it was overheating, and it's closing applications. Eventually after a few minutes, it displays another message saying that it's shutting down due to overheating. It does this after a restart, without opening any applications, in a cool room...

I agree that there shouldn't be any reason. Nobody has touched my phone but me. Turns out Marshmallow just came out from Verizon yesterday, so I'll try that and see if there is any change.

Not sure what SMS app you're using, but Textra doesn't show numbers as long as you have them saved as a contact.

This is what I found too... Went in and set my podcast app to auto delete older podcasts and miscellaneous files went from 37 GB to 14 GB.

Your IT people are blowing you off, or just being lazy. There is more they could do to help you. If they wanted to. I guarantee if you were a VIP they would spend some time to troubleshoot this.
